Nasir Ahmad Faeeq, the acting head of Afghanistan\u2019s mission to the United Nations, stated that UN seats belong exclusively to governments that come to power through legitimate means based on the will of the people and guarantee the rights of all citizens without discrimination. These remarks came in response to a request by Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban\u2019s acting foreign minister, to be granted Afghanistan\u2019s UN seat.<\/p>\n
Faeeq emphasized that representation at the UN is reserved for governments that have obtained power through legal channels, adhere to their national and international obligations, and ensure citizens’ rights without gender, ethnic, or religious discrimination within the framework of the law. He underscored that international legitimacy is assessed according to these criteria.<\/p>\n
Criticizing the Taliban administration\u2019s five-year rule, the acting envoy asserted that the regime has neither responded to the legitimate demands of the Afghan people nor paid attention to the clear expectations of the international community. According to him, the current governance has resulted in increased poverty, the spread of forced marriages, rising suicide rates among unemployed youth, targeted killings of former military personnel, suppression of freedom of expression, and the expansion of jihadi schools.<\/p>\n
Faeeq also accused the Taliban administration of enabling extremism and strengthening terrorist groups, which in turn has posed serious security threats to both Afghanistan and the region. He added that girls are currently deprived of education in schools and universities, while women have been excluded from the right to work and social participation.<\/p>\n
Posing the question, “On what positive action and criteria of legitimacy do the Taliban claim Afghanistan\u2019s seat at the United Nations?” he stressed that until a legitimate, inclusive national government is established and the fundamental rights of citizens are guaranteed, any claim to represent the Afghan people on the international stage will face serious challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
