Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban administration’s Foreign Minister, called for transferring Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations to representatives based in Kabul during a meeting with Georgette Gagnon, the acting head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). He described this issue as the “right of the Afghan people” and a responsibility of the ruling administration.<\/p>\n
According to the Taliban Foreign Ministry’s newsletter, the two sides also discussed the upcoming UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan. Muttaqi emphasized the necessity of Afghanistan’s representation at the UN and other international bodies to strengthen engagement with the global community.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Georgette Gagnon stressed the continuation of cooperation and the expansion of international community engagement with Afghanistan across various sectors. UNAMA, as the UN’s political mission in Afghanistan, coordinates international aid and monitors the human rights situation.<\/p>\n
Currently, Afghanistan’s seat at the UN is held by Naseer Ahmad Faiq, a diplomat from the previous government. The UN Credentials Committee has so far refrained from transferring the seat to the Taliban administration.
