Amnesty International has condemned the detention of the ‘Freedom Flotilla’ ships and the arrest of around 100 human rights activists by the Israeli navy, describing it as an obstruction to humanitarian aid delivery to the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n
The organization stated that Israel is once again using its military power to prevent the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza, a region that has been under blockade since 2007. According to Amnesty International, systematically stopping the delivery of essential supplies to civilians can constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law.<\/p>\n
The statement emphasized that insisting on stopping this flotilla is an attempt to intensify the blockade and entirely isolate Gaza from the outside world. The human rights body underscored that cutting off civilians’ access to basic necessities such as food and medicine could be considered a war crime within the framework of the laws of war.<\/p>\n
Amnesty International also expressed concern over the health and security conditions of the detained activists and called the international community\u2019s silence in response to the treatment of peaceful activists unjustifiable. The organization recalled that previous aid missions had also reported cases of mistreatment and rights violations against detainees.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the news website Walla reported that Israeli military forces have detained about 100 of the flotilla\u2019s passengers approximately 100 miles off the coast of Palestine. The operation to seize the vessels began on Monday.<\/p>\n
The Freedom Flotilla, consisting of 54 boats and ships, set sail from the port of Marmaris in Turkey on Thursday, heading towards Gaza.
