According to the department, these stones include beryl, kundzite, and marginite, and were sold through a bidding process.

Bakhtar News Agency, which operates under Taliban control, reported on Saturday, 26th of Sawr, quoting Mawlawi Syed Al-Rahim Ameer, head of the Taliban Department of Mines and Petroleum in Nuristan, that the sales process was conducted via bidding. No details about the participants or the oversight mechanisms of this bidding were disclosed.

According to the report, 5 million and 226 thousand Afghanis from the total proceeds will be deposited into the Taliban administration’s treasury, increasing its financial resources. The Taliban administration has repeatedly emphasized that it covers its expenses relying on internal revenues, especially mineral resources.

However, some critics argue that the extraction and sale of minerals without a transparent and legal framework raises serious concerns. They believe that revenues from the mines are more often used to consolidate the Taliban’s governance rather than being invested in infrastructure projects and public welfare.

Nuristan is among the provinces rich in precious stones in eastern Afghanistan, with emeralds and other stones extracted from the area recognized in global markets. Despite this economic potential, local residents have frequently complained that some Taliban-affiliated groups engage in unauthorized and illegal mining activities in Nuristan and other parts of the country, disregarding national interests.

Experts emphasize that transparent, legal, and accountable exploitation of mineral resources could play a significant role in Afghanistan’s economic growth; however, under current conditions, the lack of independent oversight and clear accountability heightens concerns about the management of these national wealth resources.

Taliban’s Nuristan mines sold gems worth 52M Afghanis amid concerns over transparency and legal oversight in Afghanistan’s mineral sector.

[7,17

post-13114","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-important-news
["GET
