Abdul Hakim Hakani, Chief Justice of the Taliban Supreme Court, during his visit to northern and northeastern provinces of Afghanistan, stated that no regime can endure by oppressing its people. According to a statement from the Supreme Court, Hakani traveled to the provinces of Kunduz, Badakhshan, Balkh, Jawzjan, and Baghlan. In meetings with judicial officials, he said judges should treat petitioners with kindness and good ethics, explain the rights related to disputes and the distinction of rights to both parties, and convince them accordingly. He likened the responsibility of judging to crossing the “Sirat Bridge,” warning that negligence in fulfilling duties will have consequences on the Day of Judgment.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court chief also called on Taliban administration members to refrain from “inappropriate behavior” toward prisoners and detainees and to avoid gatherings and meetings that could give rise to accusations while performing their duties. He stated that obedience to superiors is necessary only if it aligns with Sharia law and described it as a means to strengthen the regime.<\/p>\n
Hakani’s call to avoid oppression comes amid multiple reports of citizens being arrested on charges related to political and civil activities. All judicial and legal institutions operate under Taliban administration, a concentration of power that has heightened concerns about the independence of the judiciary and the provision of transparent justice.<\/p>\n
Critics argue that as long as there is no freedom to file complaints against officials and equal access to justice, talk of preventing oppression remains mere recommendation.
