The Taliban administration in Nangarhar province has announced the arrest of the head of the province’s brickmakers’ union on charges of “hoarding and price gouging,” and has shut down several brick kilns. Quraishi Badloon, the head of the Information and Culture Directorate under the Taliban administration in Nangarhar, stated that Saleem Ahmadzai, head of the brickmakers’ union, was arrested on Monday (21st of Sawr) by the Price Control and Anti-Hoarding Commission. According to him, the action was taken due to what was described as “hoarding and profiteering.”<\/p>\n
Officials from the Taliban administration said that the price for 1,000 bricks was set at 3,300 Afghanis; however, the union head, in coordination with several kiln owners, was selling bricks at higher prices. They also confirmed that some kilns have been closed due to violations.<\/p>\n
Most of Nangarhar’s brick kilns are located in the Surkh Rod district and provide a significant portion of the province’s building materials. The recent increase in brick prices has added pressure on construction businesses and residents who are in the process of building their homes.<\/p>\n
However, the Taliban administration has yet to release details about how prices are reviewed, the mechanism for setting official rates, or how complaints from producers are handled.
