Officials from the department held an awareness-raising meeting on Thursday, May 8, in Kabul, coinciding with World Thalassemia Day, under the slogan “Donate Blood, Save a Life.”

According to Dr. Niyazgul Niyazmand, head of the National Blood Bank, currently 1,500 thalassemia patients are registered in Kabul, including 790 men and 710 women. He added that 11,260 patients are registered in the provinces, comprising 5,137 men and 6,123 women. He stated that in the solar year 1404, 178 new patients were identified, and in the past year, 13,561 bags of blood were distributed to thalassemia patients—averaging close to 50 patients covered daily.

Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder in which red blood cells are not produced properly or fully. Treatment methods include regular blood transfusions, use of medications to reduce excess iron, and in some cases, bone marrow transplants.

Maulvi Abdul Wali Haqqani, Deputy Director of Health Services at the Public Health Department, said at the meeting that the aim of the program is to raise public awareness, support patients, and strengthen prevention methods against thalassemia. He emphasized that caring for patients is not solely a medical responsibility but also an Islamic and humanitarian duty.

Despite these statements, families of many thalassemia patients continuously complain about the lack of specialized facilities, limited access to advanced medical services, and high costs—issues that require transparent planning and practical investment in the health sector. Health experts stress that preventing thalassemia through genetic counseling and premarital testing can reduce incidence over the long term.

Public Health Department officials also called on the World Health Organization (WHO), international partner organizations, charities, and investors to collaborate more in equipping treatment centers, enhancing the capacity of health staff, and expanding awareness programs.

At the end of the meeting, two children suffering from thalassemia shared their life experiences and appealed to national and international organizations and donors to cooperate in providing continuous treatment and supporting their families.

May 8 marks World Thalassemia Day, a day annually observed globally to raise awareness about prevention, treatment, and support for patients with this disease.

Over 12,000 thalassemia patients registered in the country require regular blood transfusions; health officials urge increased support and awareness.

[9,17

post-12597","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","category-important-news
["GET
