Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations office in Geneva announced that Moscow views the deployment of US nuclear weapons in European countries as a threat to its national security and considers their removal key to strengthening regional security.<\/p>\n
According to RIA Novosti, Gennady Gatilov stated that the relocation and deployment of nuclear weapons in non-nuclear European countries, including Finland, pose direct risks to Russia. He emphasized that withdrawing these weapons from European territory and abandoning what he called the \u201cnuclear ambitions of non-nuclear countries\u201d could help reduce tensions.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Alexey Meshkov, Russia’s ambassador to France, also warned that discussions about extending France’s nuclear umbrella to Eastern Europe could jeopardize the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. According to him, such an approach may drive some countries towards acquiring nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n
Meshkov further described the joint nuclear drills between France and Poland, as well as Finland’s readiness to host nuclear weapons, as incompatible with the foundational Russia-NATO relationship framework established in the 1990s to regulate cooperation and prevent tensions between the two sides.<\/p>\n
These remarks come as, following the US threat to withdraw from NATO and reduce military support for Europe, France has announced plans to extend its nuclear umbrella to Eastern Europe and the Baltic states to protect them against Russia.<\/p>\n
