On May 1, International Workers’ Day, a number of workers in Afghanistan say that despite performing heavy and exhausting labor, they are deprived of the most basic labor rights and receive wages so low they do not cover their basic living needs. According to the workers, working hours are long, yet the daily wages are insufficient to meet essential expenses such as food and rent. They also state that in many work sites, safety standards are not observed and employers do not take responsibility for accidents.<\/p>\n
In response, the Taliban\u2019s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs announced that it supports workers based on international labor principles and has programs underway to train skills and raise awareness about labor rights. Samiullah Ebrahimi, the ministry’s spokesperson, said that capacity-building through institutes has been carried out for workers in both public and private sectors, and awareness programs have also been launched.<\/p>\n
However, workers\u2019 statements indicate that there remains a significant gap between official claims and the realities on the labor market; a matter that on International Workers’ Day once again draws attention to the difficult living conditions and lack of effective oversight over workers\u2019 rights in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
