According to the workers, working hours are long, yet the daily wages are insufficient to meet essential expenses such as food and rent. They also state that in many work sites, safety standards are not observed and employers do not take responsibility for accidents.

In response, the Taliban’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs announced that it supports workers based on international labor principles and has programs underway to train skills and raise awareness about labor rights. Samiullah Ebrahimi, the ministry’s spokesperson, said that capacity-building through institutes has been carried out for workers in both public and private sectors, and awareness programs have also been launched.

However, workers’ statements indicate that there remains a significant gap between official claims and the realities on the labor market; a matter that on International Workers’ Day once again draws attention to the difficult living conditions and lack of effective oversight over workers’ rights in the country.

Afghan workers protest against low wages and unsafe conditions despite official claims of support on International Workers’ Day.

[17,16,8

post-11911","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-secondary-headline","category-social-affairs
["GET
