The United Nations, citing a UNICEF report, has stated that Afghanistan has one of the lowest female literacy rates in the world. The ongoing restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration on women’s education and employment will have serious consequences. According to the UN agency, if this situation continues, by 2030 approximately 20,000 female teachers and 5,400 female health workers could be excluded from the country’s education and health services sectors.<\/p>\n
Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said at a press conference on Tuesday, April 26, that the Taliban’s ban on women’s education and employment remains in place. Citing UNICEF, he emphasized that these restrictions not only violate the fundamental rights of women and girls but also directly damage the vital educational and healthcare infrastructures of the country.<\/p>\n
According to the UNICEF report, about one million girls in Afghanistan are currently deprived of education. If this trend continues, the number of girls excluded from education could exceed two million by 2030. The agency added that these ongoing restrictions cause an annual economic loss of nearly 84 million dollars for the country, a figure that highlights the wide-ranging impact of these policies on Afghanistan’s developmental future.<\/p>\n
The United Nations also pointed to escalating tensions between the Taliban administration and Pakistan, stating that following a Pakistani attack on Kunar province, seven people were killed and 79 others injured, including 13 women and 32 children.
