According to the report released on Tuesday night, April 26, rising energy and transportation costs, along with disruptions in trade routes, have put pressure on supply chains and rendered dependent markets like Afghanistan vulnerable.

The report states that increased insurance and transport expenses, combined with trade restrictions, have complicated food imports into Afghanistan. Due to its heavy reliance on imports, especially from Iran and Pakistan, Afghanistan is highly susceptible to such regional developments.

Findings indicate that the closure of border crossings with Pakistan and limited exports from Iran have disrupted over 42 percent of the country’s food imports. As a result, prices of essential items have surged, with rice prices rising by 33 percent and wheat and oil increasing between 17 to 19 percent.

These developments come at a time when Afghanistan is simultaneously facing consecutive droughts, reduced agricultural output, and the return of millions of migrants. These factors have added further strain to the food market, making access to basic commodities more difficult for residents.

The report also warns that approximately 28 percent of Afghanistan’s population is experiencing acute food insecurity. At the same time, reduced humanitarian aid budgets have limited the capacity of relief organizations to meet urgent needs.

IFPRI emphasized that if the war in Iran continues, economic and food pressures on Afghanistan will intensify, increasing the risk of an expanding humanitarian crisis.

The Iran war is causing food prices in Afghanistan to surge, disrupting imports and worsening food insecurity, a new IFPRI report reveals.

[7,17

post-11725","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-important-news
["GET
