The 2026 Global Report on Food Crises reveals that Afghanistan ranks fifth among the world’s ten countries with the highest levels of acute hunger. According to the report, 17.4 million people in Afghanistan are facing severe food insecurity, constituting 36% of the total population.<\/p>\n
Among them, 4.7 million people are in emergency starvation or famine conditions, living day and night in situations that require urgent humanitarian assistance. These figures highlight the worsening livelihood crisis in Afghanistan, a crisis aggravated in recent years by widespread poverty, unemployment, and reduced access to income sources.<\/p>\n
Globally, Nigeria leads with 30.6 million people affected, followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo with 27.7 million, Sudan with 24.6 million, and Yemen with 18.1 million \u2014 all ranking higher than Afghanistan. After Afghanistan come countries such as Myanmar with 16.7 million, Bangladesh with 16 million, Pakistan with 11 million, South Sudan with 7.7 million, and Syria with 7.2 million people struggling with acute hunger.<\/p>\n
This report, published by a coalition of United Nations agencies, the European Union, and their international partners, adds that in 2025 a total of 266 million people across 47 countries experienced high levels of acute food insecurity\u2014nearly one-quarter of the assessed population and almost double the number recorded in 2016.<\/p>\n
The report’s authors emphasize that hunger is no longer a short-term emergency but has evolved into a persistent and growing global challenge.
