Chris Coons, a U.S. Senator from Delaware, has described the potential plan to transfer Afghan collaborators from Qatar to the Republic of Congo or to return them under the Taliban’s rule as a “cowardly betrayal” by U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Sharing a report from The New York Times on the social media platform X, Coons wrote that loyalty means “a one-way street” for the U.S. president. He emphasized that these Afghan citizens stood alongside the United States and its military forces for nearly two decades, risking their own and their families\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n
According to him, exiling these individuals to a country where they have never lived, or sending them back to Afghanistan, exposes them to serious threats and potential retaliation by the Taliban administration. The U.S. senator called such actions a disregard of America\u2019s commitments to its former allies.<\/p>\n
The New York Times had previously reported, citing sources, that the Trump administration was negotiating to transfer these collaborators from a camp in Qatar to the Republic of Congo. These individuals had been moved to Qatar after the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
Afghan Evac, an organization supporting Afghan refugees in the U.S., stated that approximately 1,100 of these collaborators are currently in the Qatar camp, including over 400 children. According to the organization, many of these individuals are translators, members of commando forces, or relatives of American soldiers.<\/p>\n
Afghan Evac also noted that previously, the option of returning to Afghanistan had been considered by the Trump administration; an option which the organization believes would expose them to the risk of retaliation by the Taliban administration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
