This session is part of Ireland’s evaluation of its foreign policy and role in international human rights support.

According to a statement published on the Irish Parliament’s website, the main focus of the meeting will be “the current situation in Afghanistan, with special emphasis on human rights and the treatment of women and girls.” The event is scheduled for 3:30 pm local time in Committee Room 2 at Leinster House.

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, Hassan Al Faiz from the Human Rights Defenders Committee, and Maboubeh Faiz, a member of the committee, will attend the meeting and present their views.

Before the meeting, John Lahart, Deputy Chair of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, stated that the situation in Afghanistan continues to cause deep concern within the international community. He noted that since August 2021, the human rights situation in the country has significantly deteriorated, with women and girls facing extensive restrictions, including a ban on education beyond the primary level, severe limitations on employment, and serious constraints on freedom of movement and participation in public life.

The Irish Parliament’s statement also mentioned that the meeting would discuss the treatment of ethnic and religious minorities, including the Hazara community, who face systematic discrimination and displacement. This comes amid multiple reports of increased pressures on these groups under the Taliban administration.

Additionally, topics such as arbitrary detentions, restrictions on freedom of expression, the weakening of legal protections, and gender-based violence-related issues will be examined. These challenges impact broad segments of Afghanistan’s population and have raised concerns among international human rights organizations.

Today’s meeting is described as part of an ongoing process to review Ireland’s foreign policy and how the country engages in supporting human rights globally.

The Irish Parliament holds a session examining human rights in Afghanistan, focusing on Taliban’s treatment of women, minorities, and key human rights issues.

[17,4,16

post-11108","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-politics","category-secondary-headline
["GET
