Chinese media have reported an increasing interest among young people in the eastern provinces of Afghanistan in learning the Chinese language; a trend that has become more prominent alongside the expansion of China’s economic activities in the country, especially in the mining sector.<\/p>\n
Xinhua News Agency announced on Sunday, April 19, that in addition to Kabul, Nangarhar University is also experiencing a rise in the number of applicants for Chinese language courses. According to the report, currently about 50 students at this university are engaged in learning Chinese.<\/p>\n
According to a Chinese language instructor at Nangarhar University, the primary motivation for students is access to job opportunities and educational scholarships. Some students have also mentioned that familiarity with Chinese culture and strengthening the relations between Afghanistan and China are other reasons for choosing this language.<\/p>\n
Students believe that mastering Chinese will enable them to secure employment in companies operating in Afghanistan\u2019s mining sector. This comes as Chinese firms have increased their presence and activities in the mining sector since the Taliban administration took control of Afghanistan\u2014a sector that has long been accompanied by concerns regarding contract transparency and the local population’s share of the revenues.<\/p>\n
