The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that following recent floods in Afghanistan, protection risks have increased in affected areas, with nearly 14,000 people at risk of gender-based violence. The agency stated that hundreds have been killed or injured, and thousands of homes have been destroyed due to heavy rains and flash floods.<\/p>\n
According to statistics from OCHA and the United Nations Population Fund, more than 73,000 people have been affected by these events, with about 32,000 requiring urgent assistance. So far, assessments have been conducted in 98 districts, but only 12,000 people have received aid\u2014highlighting a significant gap between needs and response.<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that 72% of the displaced individuals are staying with relatives, while others remain outdoors. The destruction of more than 7,500 homes and over 15,000 acres of farmland has threatened the livelihoods of thousands of families, increasing poverty, indebtedness, and psychological stress.<\/p>\n
OCHA described the situation in the eastern and southeastern regions of the country as concerning, noting that damaged roads have made access to services more difficult and have heightened people’s vulnerabilities. The United Nations Population Fund also reported that the floods have destroyed infrastructure and disrupted health and protection services, with women and girls facing serious barriers to accessing essential services, particularly reproductive healthcare.<\/p>\n
While the National Disaster Management Authority under the Taliban has provided higher casualty figures, reporting nearly 200 deaths and over 250 injuries caused by floods, earthquakes, and landslides, aid organizations complain about resource shortages and difficulties accessing affected areas.
