Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan for the Human Rights Council, has called for an independent, transparent, and impartial investigation into the recent bloody incident in Herat, which, according to Taliban administration statistics, resulted in at least 12 deaths and 20 injuries.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bennett described the incident as “brutal” and considered it an example of a “war crime.” He emphasized that this attack must not only be strongly condemned but also thoroughly and independently examined to uncover the truth.<\/p>\n
The UN Special Rapporteur further warned that those responsible for this event must be identified and brought to justice. He stated that ending the culture of impunity is a prerequisite for ensuring justice and preventing the recurrence of such incidents.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, several eyewitnesses reported that during the shooting by armed individuals at the gathering, a Taliban administration ranger vehicle was near the scene but did not approach it. These claims have raised questions about the security management and the response of responsible forces to the attack.<\/p>\n
Two days after this deadly event, no individual or group has claimed responsibility.
