Nazar Amidi, the official candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), was elected as Iraq\u2019s new president in the second round of parliamentary voting, securing a majority of the votes and succeeding Abdul Latif Rashid at Baghdad\u2019s Al-Salam Palace.<\/p>\n
In the first round of voting, none of the candidates were able to secure the required two-thirds majority of the parliamentarians\u2019 votes. Iraq\u2019s Parliament Speaker, Hibatullah al-Luaybi, announced that due to the failure to reach the necessary quorum, the voting process was extended to a second round, where the candidate with the highest number of votes is declared the winner.<\/p>\n
According to the announced results, Nazar Amidi received 208 votes, Masna Amin 17 votes, Fuad Hussein 16 votes, and Abdullah al-Ulayawi 2 votes, while 9 votes were declared invalid. Since no candidate attained the two-thirds majority in the first round, the competition among the leading candidates continued, ultimately enabling Amidi to secure the majority.<\/p>\n
The parliamentary session was held with the presence of 223 representatives out of a total of 329 members, a figure that, according to the speaker, constituted the legal quorum to start voting. Prior to the vote, Asu Fredoun Ali and Abdul Latif Rashid both withdrew their candidacies.<\/p>\n
Some factions, including the Rights faction, boycotted the session, and reports indicate that members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, the State of Law Coalition, and the Al-Asas coalition were also absent from the meeting. Additionally, some media outlets reported verbal altercations among several representatives.<\/p>\n
According to the Iraqi constitution, the president must be elected by a two-thirds majority of parliament members\u2014a threshold of 220 votes\u2014requiring broad political consensus among parties. This mechanism has caused repeated delays in presidential elections over recent years.<\/p>\n
