The ministry described the Yetimtaqi gas field as its most important project.

According to the ministry’s statement, a delegation led by Mullah Mohammad Israil has inspected the drilling operations in the area. The drilling and gas extraction work at this field is carried out by the Turkish company Safir Sondaj.

The statement noted that drilling of well number two is underway, and work on other wells will soon commence. Sheberghan has historically been one of the main centers of natural gas reserves in northern Afghanistan, and its gas has served as a significant domestic energy source at various times.

In recent years, the Taliban administration has focused on extracting minerals and underground resources, particularly projects that generate quicker revenue. Previously, oil extraction began in the north of the country, and now expanding gas extraction is a priority.

However, contracts related to mining and natural resource extraction signed under the Taliban administration are often not transparently available to the public.
