EU Parliament Member Says Deal with Russia Could Have Prevented Energy Crisis

Rudy Kenis, a member of the European Parliament from Belgium, stated that if the European Union had quickly reached an agreement with Russia following the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, it could have averted the widespread energy crisis. According to him, such a decision would have prevented the sharp rise in gas prices in European markets.
Kenis praised the Prime Minister of Belgium, saying he was “the only one who realistically proposed to resume energy supplies from Russia and make an agreement with Moscow.” He emphasized that this approach could have brought greater stability to the energy market.
The European Parliament member also criticized the current policies of the European Union, adding that Europe should not rely on the United States for energy supplies and buy gas at several times the price. In his view, these decisions have imposed additional financial pressure on European citizens.
According to Kenis, the people of European countries are now paying the price for the EU leaders’ decisions. At the same time, gas prices in Europe have risen sharply since early March, at times exceeding $800 per thousand cubic meters.
