UN Stresses Peace in Afghanistan Amid Nowruz and Eid al-Fitr Celebrations

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), coinciding with the arrival of Nowruz and Eid al-Fitr, has issued separate messages emphasizing the need for peace, calm, and mutual acceptance in Afghanistan. The agency expressed hope that the new solar year would bring stability and tranquility to the people of Afghanistan.

On Saturday, the first of Hamal month, the organization posted on its official X account that it hopes the new year will be a “happy, healthy, and peaceful” one for all Afghan citizens. The message highlighted the importance of social solidarity and creating a safe environment for people to live across the country.

In a separate message, UN-Habitat also extended Eid al-Fitr greetings to the people of Afghanistan, stressing the reinforcement of community spirit and peaceful coexistence. The agency referred to religious and cultural occasions as opportunities to bring people closer together and strengthen social bonds.

Earlier, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, had emphasized the need to ensure lasting peace in the country in his Eid message. Various UN bodies continue to call for sustainable peace in Afghanistan while citizens still face significant political, social, and economic challenges.
