North Korea Fires Around 10 Ballistic Missiles into East Sea Amid Joint South Korea-US Drills

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that North Korea fired approximately 10 ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Saturday. According to the organization, the launches occurred around 1:20 p.m. local time from the Sunan area within North Korean territory and were detected by Seoul’s surveillance systems.

In a statement, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs emphasized the country’s readiness to respond decisively to any provocative actions from its northern neighbor. No further details regarding the range or types of the missiles have been released.

Earlier, South Korea’s Ministry of Defense reported the launch of an unidentified projectile toward the Sea of Japan. Japan’s Defense Minister stated that the projectile, believed to be a ballistic missile, fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

These developments coincide with the ongoing annual joint military exercises between South Korean and U.S. forces, known as “Freedom Shield.” Part of these drills took place today along a river in Yeoncheon, north of Seoul.

Meanwhile, the sister of North Korea’s leader recently criticized the continuation of these exercises, calling them a threat to her country’s security and warning that any actions against Pyongyang would have serious consequences.
