Lavrov Calls for Diplomatic Resolution of Taliban-Pakistan Tensions

Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced that Sergey Lavrov, the country’s Foreign Minister, in a phone call with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister of the Taliban administration, emphasized the necessity of resolving the disputes between the Taliban and Pakistan through political and diplomatic means. The conversation took place today, Friday, March 5.

According to the statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two sides discussed prospects for reducing military and political tensions in Taliban-Pakistan relations. Moscow had previously expressed concern over the escalating conflicts between the two parties and called for restraint.

The statement also noted that Lavrov and Muttaqi exchanged views on the “negative and destabilizing consequences of aggression against Iran.” No further details on this part of the conversation have been released.

Armed clashes between the Taliban and Pakistan have now entered their second week. Reports indicate that Pakistan’s attacks on certain areas of Afghanistan have resulted in more than 185 civilian casualties, both killed and injured; events that have sparked widespread concerns about the safety of residents in border regions.

These ongoing tensions persist while residents of the affected areas are calling for an immediate end to hostilities and the provision of security. Observers believe that continued military approaches by the parties could worsen the humanitarian situation and turn the protection of civilians into a serious demand for the Taliban administration and other involved parties.
