Pakistani Religious Leader Urges Dialogue with Afghanistan to Resolve Regional Tensions

Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, leader of Pakistan’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, has called on the Pakistani government to choose the path of dialogue with Afghanistan to resolve ongoing issues. He emphasized that negotiations with Afghanistan and other neighboring countries are the fundamental way to reduce tensions and prevent the escalation of insecurity in the region.

According to the press release from the Prime Minister’s Office of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif convened a meeting including political party leaders, updating them on the regional security situation and Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts. The meeting also covered regional developments and strategies for managing foreign relations.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister stated that de-escalating tensions between Iran and Gulf countries is one of Pakistan’s primary diplomatic priorities. He noted that regional stability is fundamentally important for the shared interests of neighboring countries.

The press release mentioned that participants emphasized the necessity of national unity, political consensus, and adopting a common stance under current circumstances. However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) refrained from attending the meeting.

According to reports, Fazl-ur-Rehman suggested that all political parties should have a role in discussing critical national issues. He stressed that dialogue with Afghanistan and other regional countries is the “foundation for resolving tensions.”

This comes amid a longstanding debate among Pakistani politicians, with some consistently advocating for resolving security challenges through engagement with Afghanistan, while certain military circles insist on continuing military pressure. Diverging views within Pakistan on how to handle relations with Afghanistan have become a central topic in the country’s political discourse in recent years.
