Iran’s Guardian Council Affirms Leader Selection Responsibility Lies with the Assembly of Experts

The spokesperson for Iran’s Guardian Council stated that, according to the country’s constitution, the responsibility for selecting the new Supreme Leader rests with the Assembly of Experts, and there is no legal ambiguity regarding this matter.
Referring to the current circumstances and the atmosphere of mourning in Iran, he noted that although the tragedy is heavy and deeply sorrowful, the legal framework of the Islamic Republic of Iran has made the necessary provisions for such situations.
He explained that Chapter Eight of Iran’s constitution is dedicated to the issue of leadership, the method of its selection, and the mechanism for forming the temporary Leadership Council, with clear details outlined in the law.
The Guardian Council official emphasized that, in accordance with Article 111 of the constitution, until the Assembly of Experts convenes and selects a new leader, the temporary Leadership Council — composed of the president, the head of the judiciary, and one of the Guardian Council’s jurists — will temporarily be responsible for managing affairs.
Following the military attack by the United States and Israel on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei and several senior officials were martyred.
