UN Special Rapporteur Urges Immediate De-escalation Between Afghanistan and Pakistan

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, has called for immediate calm and adherence to international humanitarian law following rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He emphasized that the protection of civilians must be a priority and that all violent actions should cease immediately.
Bennett expressed concern that political tensions between the two countries have escalated into violence, describing the current situation as “deeply regrettable.” According to him, ongoing conflicts could further complicate the humanitarian conditions in border areas and pose serious risks to civilian lives.
The UN Special Rapporteur also stressed the necessity for all parties to uphold their international commitments and called the immediate reduction of tensions “essential.” These remarks come as past border clashes between the two sides have resulted in significant loss of life and property for local populations.
In this context, it is expected that the Taliban administration and Pakistani officials, recognizing the sensitivity of the situation, will refrain from actions that exacerbate the crisis and instead pursue diplomatic channels to resolve disputes, as the continuation of tensions primarily affects civilian lives.
