UNHCR Reports 2.9 Million Afghans Returned Home in 2025

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced that, based on its statistics, a total of 2.9 million Afghan nationals returned to the country from neighboring nations in the Persian calendar year 2025.

The report indicates that 1.9 million of these individuals returned from Iran, while one million came back from Pakistan. This figure represents one of the largest waves of return in recent years.

According to the provided information, the majority of returns were recorded through the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat province and the Torkham crossing in Nangarhar province; two of the most important routes frequently used by Afghan migrants.

This large-scale return is occurring amid ongoing challenges, as many returnees face economic difficulties, a lack of employment opportunities, and limited access to essential services within the country. Aid organizations have repeatedly emphasized that to ensure the sustainable integration of returnees, the Taliban administration and the international community urgently need to provide employment opportunities, shelter, as well as health and educational services.
