UNHCR Chief Meets Taliban Official to Discuss Aid for Returning Afghan Refugees

The head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that the agency provided humanitarian aid and services to 2.2 million returning Afghans last year. Arfat Jamal made these remarks during a meeting with Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, the Taliban official in charge of migrant affairs.

According to the information presented, the assistance includes support services for returnees who face livelihood challenges and lack of resources in various areas following their return to the country. Afghanistan has experienced a significant wave of migrant returns from neighboring countries in recent years, with ongoing high needs for shelter, livelihoods, and basic services.

Meanwhile, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir emphasized the importance of coordination between the Taliban administration and international organizations in addressing the situation of returnees. He stated that joint cooperation could improve the process of providing services to returning migrants.

Despite this, aid organizations have consistently stressed that effective response to the problems of returnees requires transparent planning, unhindered access to vulnerable areas, and guaranteed equitable distribution of aid—issues that the Taliban administration is expected to seriously address in coordination with international partners.
