Afghanistan Exports $54 Million Worth of Saffron in One Year

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce under the Taliban administration has announced that the country exported 56 tons of saffron worth 54 million dollars to regional and global markets in the past year. According to the ministry, saffron exports increased by about 10 million dollars compared to the previous year, reflecting nearly a 10 percent growth.

Abdulsalam Jawad Akhundzada, the ministry’s spokesperson, stated that Afghan saffron was exported to countries such as India, Spain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Turkey. These countries are considered significant markets for Afghanistan’s saffron.

Taliban officials attribute the rise in exports to the expansion of cultivation areas and improvements in product quality. Afghan saffron has gained a notable position in global markets in recent years due to its high quality.

According to provided information, nearly 90 percent of the country’s saffron is produced in Herat province, historically recognized as the main center of saffron cultivation. However, economic activists consistently emphasize that maintaining and expanding global markets requires transparent planning, effective support for farmers, and sustainable access to international markets—challenges that are currently significant under Taliban rule.
