Taliban’s Ambassador in Moscow Announces Expansion of Ties with Russia

The Taliban administration’s ambassador in Moscow has stated that relations between Kabul and Russia are in a “very good” condition and that bilateral cooperation is expanding. He emphasized that Russia was the first country to officially recognize the Taliban regime, considering this a sign of the high level of engagement between the two sides.
Gul Hassan Hasan, in an interview with Sputnik News Agency, said that direct flights between Afghanistan and Russia have already been established and are planned to be expanded in the future. According to him, this is part of the process to strengthen bilateral relations.
While the Taliban’s ambassador underscores the expansion of ties with Moscow, it is noteworthy that Russia remains the only country to officially recognize the Taliban regime to date—a move many countries have yet to take, as the Taliban continues its efforts to gain legitimacy and broader engagement regionally and internationally.
Earlier, Russia’s ambassador to Pakistan noted that security in Afghanistan has improved compared to the past, which has led Moscow to prioritize developing trade and economic relations with Afghanistan. He added that Russia’s focus will be primarily on expanding economic and commercial cooperation.
Meanwhile, some political experts believe the Taliban administration should seize this opportunity to establish balanced relations and secure the country’s economic interests. Gul Mohammaddin Mohammadi, a political analyst, stated that there are numerous capacities for expanding engagement across various sectors between the two sides.
Relations between Afghanistan and Russia, as a key regional player, have entered a new phase in recent years; however, the future of these relations largely depends on how the Taliban administration interacts with the international community and the extent of its global acceptance.
