Concerns Over Data Security Amid AI Expansion in Afghanistan

As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) expands in Afghanistan, many residents have expressed concerns about its potential dangers, particularly regarding the security of personal information. In recent months, this technology has been employed by some institutions and organizations to increase speed and improve efficiency, attracting widespread public attention.

Technology experts, while acknowledging the benefits of AI, emphasize responsible and limited use. Mohammad Aziz Rastegari, a technology expert, states that from the perspectives of accuracy, processing speed, easy access to information, aiding medical treatments, and preventing time loss, AI has considerable potential; however, without clear frameworks, it can become challenging.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology under the Taliban administration has stated that with positive and effective use, AI can play an important role in various sectors of society. Eniyatullah Alkhozi, the ministry spokesperson, said efforts to expand this technology are ongoing under supervision and within defined frameworks.

However, the details of these frameworks and monitoring mechanisms have not been clearly shared with the public—a matter some experts believe requires more transparency and accountability. According to the ministry spokesperson, due to limitations in digital infrastructure and a shortage of specialized personnel, the AI development process is progressing gradually and in specific areas.

Previously, several United Nations agencies had warned about the potential misuse of AI and stressed the necessity for lawful and responsible use of this technology—a warning that gains greater significance considering the state of technical infrastructure and lack of comprehensive laws in the country.
