FAO Forecasts Near-Normal Rainfall and Rising Temperatures in Afghanistan

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced that, based on its latest analyses, rainfall levels in western and southern Afghanistan from February 16 to 22 will be near normal and above average in some areas, while northern provinces and central highlands will continue to experience drier-than-usual conditions.

According to this forecast, precipitation in the northern regions and central highlands is expected to remain below the seasonal average, a situation that could impact water resources and the condition of winter crops in these areas.

FAO also highlighted an unusual rise in temperatures across the country, stating that in the coming days, temperatures will be 1 to 8 degrees Celsius higher than the average. In southern provinces, temperatures are expected to exceed 20 degrees Celsius.

The organization believes the warmer weather could reduce the risk of frost and aid the growth of crops and pastures. However, the rise in temperature might cause quicker snowmelt in mountainous areas, potentially leading to reduced snow reserves and decreased soil moisture later in the season.
