Senior Pakistani Politician Challenges Official Security Claims, Blames Domestic Failures for Insecurity

Hafiz Hamdullah, a senior member of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party and former senator of Pakistan, has strongly criticized the country’s security and intelligence agencies, questioning Islamabad’s official claims about the root causes of insecurity and attributing it to internal failures.

In his latest remarks, he emphasized that the Pakistani government has consistently tried to blame Afghanistan for the insecurity in the capital and other regions. However, he argued, this narrative does not align with the realities on the ground. Hamdullah questioned, if the perpetrators of violence come from Afghanistan, why has this insecurity not spread to other neighboring countries like Iran or China?

Responding to General Asim Munir’s statements— the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan—which warned that countries without organized militaries risk facing the fates of Syria and Lebanon, Hamdullah said: Pakistan considers itself to have one of the most powerful armies, intelligence agencies, and nuclear capabilities; yet despite these claims, the security situation in cities remains critical, with bodies being recovered from the streets daily.

Hamdullah also described Pakistan’s political and social climate as restrictive, noting that voices demanding justice are being silenced. According to him, citizens’ main fear is not death itself but being punished for questioning and demanding accountability.

He asserted that people have the right to seek answers for the bloodshed, and he is not afraid of any pressure or threats along this path. These statements come in the wake of a recent suicide attack in Islamabad attributed to ISIS, after which Pakistani officials again blamed Afghanistan. Hamdullah, a resident of Quetta, believes the root of Pakistan’s security crisis lies in internal failures rather than neighboring countries.
