UN Chief Guterres Warns End of New START Treaty Threatens Global Security

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, described the end of the New START treaty as a perilous moment for international peace and security and warned of its consequences.
Guterres emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating that the expiration of New START poses a serious threat to global strategic stability. He called on the United States and Russia to promptly return to the negotiating table to reach an agreement on a reliable alternative framework.
According to the UN Secretary-General, the absence of a credible nuclear arms control agreement could heighten the risk of an arms race and intensify distrust among major powers.
The New START treaty was signed in 2010 between the United States and Russia, aiming to control and reduce the two countries’ nuclear arsenals. Under the treaty, each party committed to limiting its nuclear warheads to a maximum of 1,550.
