Colombian President Gustavo Petro Says World Awakening to Gaza Crisis

Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, stated after meeting with Donald Trump in the United States that the previously silent world is now showing signs of awakening to the situation in Gaza, with protests spreading across various countries.
Petro made these remarks during his official trip to the U.S., noting that the streets of America, Colombia, and several European countries have witnessed protests against what he called a “genocide in Gaza.” He emphasized that these reactions reflect a gradual shift in global public opinion.
The Colombian president described his meeting with Trump as “positive” and added that discussions included topics related to energy and reducing customs tariff pressures. According to him, South American countries possess extensive untapped energy resources that could play a role in developing clean energy in the United States.
Petro also addressed regional security challenges, mentioning that Colombia’s borders are affected by drug trafficking and that joint cooperation with neighboring countries could help curb this issue. He added that economic relations between Colombia, Venezuela, and the U.S. have been disrupted over past decades due to political disagreements.
The Colombian leader also reported the seizure of a submarine carrying several tons of drugs near Colombia’s borders and stated that he has asked the U.S. president for cooperation to pursue and apprehend major drug traffickers residing outside the country.
Since the start of the Gaza war, Petro has repeatedly warned about the humanitarian situation there and urged the international community not to remain silent against what he views as widespread human rights violations. His recent visit to the U.S. is also seen as part of efforts to redefine bilateral relations, especially in the areas of energy, trade, and regional cooperation.
