WFP Advances Irrigation Canal Rehabilitation Project in Takhar Province

The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that the project to rehabilitate irrigation canals and water channels in Takhar province is rapidly progressing with financial support from the agency and cooperation from local residents.

According to WFP, upon completion of these canals, farmers will be able to regularly and easily deliver water to their agricultural lands; an initiative that enables better water resource management and paves the way for increased agricultural production.

The agency emphasizes that the primary goal of the project is to empower people to stand on their own feet so that in the long term, their need and dependence on emergency food aid will decrease.

The World Food Programme also adds that such projects, besides creating short-term employment opportunities, play an important role in the long-term growth, stability, and sustainability of Afghanistan’s agricultural sector and can contribute to strengthening food security at the local level.
