Taliban Foreign Minister Arrives in New Delhi for Official Visit Invited by India

Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban administration’s foreign minister, has arrived in New Delhi. The five-day trip is taking place at the official invitation of the Indian government and following the granting of a travel exemption by the United Nations Security Council.

Randeep Goyal, spokesman for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, announced on Wednesday, October 18, via a post on the social media platform X, alongside a photo of Muttaqi, that discussions regarding bilateral relations and regional developments will occur during this visit.

Although the details of the meetings have not been officially disclosed, Muttaqi’s visit comes at a time when the Taliban administration remains unrecognized internationally. Moreover, the group’s repressive actions—particularly concerning human rights, girls’ education, and civil liberties—have raised serious global concerns.

India’s decision to hold these talks, while other regional countries maintain cautious relations with the Taliban administration, has sparked questions about the future approach to regional engagement with the group. Meanwhile, the international community is expected to urge the Taliban authorities to take tangible steps to address the demands of the Afghan people.
