Taliban Ministry of Justice Declares Criticism of ‘Sharia Protest’ Laws as Objection to Sharia Itself

The Taliban’s Ministry of Justice has announced that all legislative documents of the administration are reviewed for compliance with Islamic Sharia before approval, and no provisions in these laws contradict Sharia.

In a statement released by the ministry, it was stated that the legislative documents are drafted and evaluated by a panel of scholars based on the Holy Quran, the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, and authoritative Hanafi jurisprudence sources. According to the ministry, this process aims to ensure the “legitimacy” of the laws under Sharia.

The Ministry of Justice further emphasized that any criticism of these laws will be considered an objection to Sharia itself; a stance that has sparked concerns among legal experts and civil activists since it blurs the line between legal critique and religious accusation.

Moreover, the ministry warned that individuals who criticize these laws will be referred to judicial and legal authorities for prosecution. Critics argue that such an approach could further restrict the space for free debate, social accountability, and public oversight of the Taliban administration’s performance.
