France Bans Social Media Use for Under-15s to Protect Children’s Mental Health

France’s National Assembly has approved a bill banning social media use for individuals under the age of 15, aiming primarily to combat online harassment and safeguard children’s mental health. The bill was passed on Monday evening, January 26, with 116 votes in favor and 23 against. Under the provisions, social media platforms will be required to effectively block access to younger children through age verification mechanisms in accordance with European Union regulations. Furthermore, the law extends the existing ban on smartphone use in primary and middle schools to high schools, ensuring educational environments remain free from personal digital devices. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the law to be enacted by the start of the next academic year in September, citing social media as a factor contributing to increased violence among teenagers. The bill is now forwarded to the French Senate for final review. If approved, France will join other countries imposing age restrictions on social media, including Australia, which previously banned access for individuals under 16.
