Taliban Courts Flog at Least 31 People in One Week Across Afghanistan

The Supreme Court of the Taliban administration has announced that courts under its authority have flogged at least 31 individuals across various Afghan provinces in the past week. According to the report, these punishments were carried out in Kabul, Nangarhar, Balkh, Herat, and Faryab provinces.

Published information indicates that the highest number of cases occurred in Nangarhar province, where 16 people were flogged. Additionally, 6 people were punished in Kabul, 3 in Balkh, 3 in Herat, and 3 others in Faryab.

The Taliban Supreme Court has not provided specific details regarding how these punishments were executed or the conditions of the accused. However, reports show that in many cases, the Taliban carry out flogging publicly, a practice that has consistently drawn negative reactions.

In the latest statement from the authority, it was noted that on Wednesday, six individuals in Kabul were each sentenced to 39 lashes and three years of suspended imprisonment on charges of “theft.” No further details about the judicial proceedings of these cases have been disclosed.

The continuation of corporal punishments by the Taliban administration, despite explicit opposition from international human rights organizations and human dignity advocates, has raised growing concerns over the violation of fundamental rights of Afghan citizens. These entities have repeatedly emphasized that flogging and other corporal punishments constitute inhumane treatment and violate internationally accepted standards.

Earlier, the Taliban Supreme Court announced that in 2025, at least six individuals were executed and 1,118 others were flogged across Afghanistan on various charges; statistics that reflect the continuity and expansion of this punitive approach in the country.
