Taliban’s Amir Khan Muttaqi Travels to Russia for Moscow Format Meeting on Afghanistan Security

A new meeting under the ‘Moscow Format’ is set to take place, bringing together representatives from several regional countries including Russia, Iran, China, and Pakistan. One of the main topics of the meeting is the security situation in Afghanistan.

According to Russian media reports, the meeting will cover a range of regional issues, with Afghan security being a central focus. So far, detailed information about the exact agenda has not been released.

Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban administration, traveled to Russia yesterday to participate in this meeting. He is attending such meetings despite the Taliban administration’s failure to ensure security, human rights, and political participation within Afghanistan, contrary to international commitments.

Representatives from key regional countries such as India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan will also be present. The broad participation of these countries reflects growing concern over Afghanistan’s situation and its security implications for the region.

While the Taliban administration views its attendance as a sign of engagement with the international community, critics argue that unless the Taliban are accountable to the Afghan people and gain popular legitimacy, such dialogues will not lead to an improvement in the country’s situation.
