Trump Blames US Withdrawal from Afghanistan for Weakening America’s Global Standing

Donald Trump, the current President of the United States, has once again criticized the manner in which American forces withdrew from Afghanistan, stating that abandoning military equipment there weakened the US’s global position.

Trump made these remarks in an interview with Fox News, comparing the Afghanistan withdrawal to the recent attack on Venezuela, which he claimed led to the arrest of that country’s President, Nicolás Maduro. He contrasted the current state of American military power with the conditions following the Afghanistan exit.

The US President said that during his first term, he rebuilt the US military, but, in his opinion, a significant portion of military equipment was left in Afghanistan ‘irresponsibly.’ After the collapse of the previous regime, this equipment fell into the hands of the Taliban, sparking widespread domestic and international criticism.

Trump regarded the withdrawal from Afghanistan as the main cause of the damage to America’s prestige, saying the country became, for a while, a “subject of mockery” worldwide. He emphasized that now, according to his claims, the US has once again become a “respected” nation.

He further claimed that the US military is currently stronger than ever and equipped with the most advanced military hardware—an assertion that has often been a key part of his national security discourse.

Trump has previously criticized the US withdrawal from Afghanistan during Joe Biden’s presidency multiple times. In contrast, the Biden administration has consistently defended the decision, stating that the withdrawal ended a two-decade war and was based on an agreement signed with the Taliban during Trump’s administration—a pact whose consequences remain a topic of debate and criticism in political and media circles.
