UN Human Rights Council Adopts New Resolution on Afghanistan Without Opposition

A new resolution concerning the human rights situation in Afghanistan was adopted yesterday by the United Nations Human Rights Council without any opposing votes. This decision highlights the growing isolation of the Taliban administration within the international community and underscores the group’s lack of support on the global stage.

Nasir Andisheh, Afghanistan’s representative to the United Nations in Geneva, described this move as an important step toward restoring the rights of Afghan citizens. He emphasized that no country has supported the Taliban administration on the international stage. According to him, global engagement with the Taliban has remained limited to temporary, non-binding arrangements.

Mr. Andisheh expressed his gratitude to all civil society organizations, Afghanistan’s women’s movement, and both domestic and international organizations that contributed to establishing this independent investigative mechanism. He regarded the adoption of this resolution as a practical advancement in securing the rights of the Afghan people.

The unanimous passage of this document sends a clear message to the Taliban administration that the international community is not turning a blind eye to the dire human rights situation in Afghanistan. It calls for effective measures to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for violations of fundamental rights, particularly those affecting women and minorities.
