UN Security Council to Hold Emergency Meeting on US Military Attack on Venezuela

According to a Reuters report, the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the United States’ military attack on Venezuela and its repercussions. This meeting follows the announcement by US President Donald Trump regarding the arrest and transfer of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
On Saturday, Donald Trump stated that US forces, after conducting military operations in Venezuela, had detained Nicolás Maduro and his wife and removed them from the country. He added that Washington would maintain control over Venezuela “until a secure, proper, and measured transitional process” is established, although details on how the US plans to oversee the country’s affairs remain unclear.
Meanwhile, reports from Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, indicate that around 2 a.m. local time on Saturday, at least seven explosions were heard along with low-flying aircraft over parts of the city, events that have alarmed local residents.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres described the US action as creating “a dangerous precedent” and announced that the Security Council would convene an emergency session to examine the matter. According to diplomats, the request for this meeting was submitted by Colombia with the support of Russia and China to the 15-member Security Council.
Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, confirmed that the Security Council meeting would address the US attack on Venezuela and the detention of its president. Meanwhile, Venezuela’s Foreign Minister, Ivan Gil Pinto, sent an official letter to the UN condemning the US action as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and national security and called for an immediate response from the Security Council.
The Security Council had previously convened twice in October and December of last year amid escalating tensions between the United States and Venezuela. However, the recent developments have raised a new level of international concern regarding the legal and security implications of the US’s actions.
