UNDP Reports Over 2.8 Million Afghans Returned Home in 2025, Highlighting Urgent Needs

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced that more than 2.8 million Afghan citizens returned to the country in 2025, highlighting urgent livelihood and service needs in host areas.
According to the statement, with support from the UN Special Team for Afghanistan (UN STFA), nine UN-affiliated agencies, including the UNDP, have launched programs to support families in eastern provinces of Afghanistan.
These aid efforts include providing solar energy for homes and vocational training for young people—initiatives aimed at reducing economic pressure on returning families and strengthening local capacities.
International organizations emphasize that the large-scale return of Afghan citizens, without sustainable access to basic services and job opportunities, could create new social and economic challenges and requires continuous coordination of humanitarian and development assistance.
