New Settlement Being Built in Kandahar for Returning Families

In the Zhari district of Kandahar province, a new settlement is being constructed on approximately three thousand jeribs of land in the Mir Hazar Kariz area, aimed at housing families who have returned to the country.

According to information provided by the Kandahar Urban Development and Housing Department, residential plots with organized roads have been allocated for about four thousand returning families in this settlement. Facilities such as a mosque, school, religious seminary, kindergarten, commercial market, health center, wedding hall, playgrounds, and a water supply network are also planned for construction.

Abdul Mateen Saeed, head of Kandahar’s Urban Development and Housing Department, stated that the distribution of organized plots with road access for families in Zhari district is ongoing. At the same time, officials from the Kandahar Department of Refugees and Repatriation announced that the distribution of land for thousands of families has also begun in the Daman and Zhari districts.

Nematullah Olafat, deputy of this department, said that the plot sizes range between 500 and 1,500 square meters, designated to house around five thousand families. According to him, plans for similar settlements are also underway in the Spin Boldak, Takht-e-Pul, and Panjwai districts.

However, some returning families have cautiously welcomed this initiative, urging the Taliban administration to seriously address the provision of essential services. Some residents say that without roads, schools, and reliable water access, life in these settlements will face significant challenges.

One newly returned family member said that immediate needs include roads and schools, while another emphasized that access to drinking water is vital for sustaining life in the area. These statements raise questions once again about the quality of services and the Taliban administration’s responsibility towards returnees.
