Trump-Backed Candidate Nasry Asfura Officially Wins Contentious Honduras Election

Honduran electoral authorities have officially declared Nasry Asfura, the conservative candidate from the National Party and supported by US President Donald Trump, the winner of the country’s presidential election. The election has been marred by widespread protests over allegations of fraud and foreign interference.
The results were announced after weeks of vote counting, a process that critics say has raised serious doubts about the transparency and legitimacy of Honduras’s electoral system. According to official figures, Asfura secured 40.27% of the vote, narrowly surpassing his main opponent, Salvador Nasralla.
Salvador Nasralla, leader of the Liberal Party who received 39.53% of the votes, has refused to accept the results and accused electoral officials of betraying the will of the people. He, along with a significant portion of the Honduran population, considers the election tainted by widespread fraud.
In this election, the ruling left-wing party also suffered a heavy defeat, with its candidate, Maria Andrea Chavez, winning only 19.19% of the vote. This outcome has significantly altered the political balance in Honduras.
Prior to the election, Donald Trump warned that US aid to Honduras would be cut off if his endorsed candidate did not win. Critics view such statements as an indication of external political pressure that could undermine the independence of democratic processes in smaller countries.
