Mufti Taqi Usmani Criticizes Lifetime Immunity for Pakistan Army Chief

Mufti Taqi Usmani, a prominent Pakistani religious scholar, has condemned recent decisions concerning the leadership of Pakistan’s Army, stating they contradict Islamic teachings. He emphasized that granting lifetime immunity to General Asim Munir and exempting him from judicial accountability conflicts with the principle of justice.

Speaking at a meeting on Monday, he said that in an Islamic system, no individual is above the law, and rulers and senior officials must be held accountable for their actions. According to him, justice and accountability are fundamental pillars of Sharia, and any permanent immunity for powerful individuals undermines these principles.

The religious scholar warned that discrimination between ordinary citizens and officials under the law damages public trust and fosters injustice within society. He urged responsible institutions to prioritize Islamic values and justice standards in political and military decisions.

These remarks come amid heightened debates in recent weeks about the role of the military and the extent of authority held by Pakistan’s military leaders, sparking diverse viewpoints across the country’s political and social arenas.
