UN Report: ISIS-K Spokesman Arrested by Pakistani Forces

According to a recent report by the United Nations Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, Pakistani forces arrested Sultan Aziz Azam, the spokesperson for the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K), in May 2025. The report states that Azam was captured in the border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The UN Security Council identifies Sultan Aziz Azam as one of the key figures within ISIS-K, highlighting his significant role in the group’s media and propaganda operations. The report notes that after joining ISIS, Azam became part of its central core and eventually emerged as one of its influential members.
Azam has led the media division of ISIS-K since 2014, the year he joined the group. Prior to his involvement with ISIS, he graduated from Nangarhar University and worked as a journalist, managing a local radio station called “Hamisha Bahar.”
The UN report also reveals that before joining ISIS, Azam wrote short stories and published critical commentary about society and the government. Following his affiliation with ISIS, he took charge of the group’s online magazine, “Voice of Khorasan,” and oversaw parts of ISIS’s media center activities under the Al-Azaim Foundation.
