Republican Lawmaker Proposes U.S. Withdrawal from NATO

Thomas Massie, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has introduced a bill in Congress calling for the United States to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In a post on the social media platform X, Massie described NATO as a “relic of the Cold War” and argued that U.S. financial resources should be directed toward defending the homeland rather than other countries.

The proposed bill states that European NATO member states possess sufficient financial and military capabilities to defend themselves, and notes that although the global landscape has changed since NATO’s formation, the alliance has continued its expansion since 1999. The draft legislation further claims that NATO’s current policies no longer align with the national security interests of the United States.

According to U.S. media reports, it is not yet clear when the proposal will be reviewed, as it must first be assessed by relevant House committees. Established in 1949 with the signatures of foreign ministers from 12 countries including the U.S., NATO now includes 32 member states.

NATO’s expansion into Eastern Europe has been cited by Russia as one of the key reasons for its invasion of Ukraine. Analysts say that while the new bill is unlikely to pass, it reflects a growing isolationist trend among some Republican politicians who increasingly question the U.S. role in global alliances.
